Nyssa is a 2.5D isometric multiplayer game where players take on the roles of two nature spirits, Sprout and Celeste. They must collaborate with each other in order to restore nature from a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by the effects of pollution and climate change, as well as help the animals they encounter along the way. Both have different sets of powers to restore nature and help each other; Celeste is in charge of attacking pollution monsters, while Sprout heals and plants greenery. Players must balance when to use certain special abilities as they can affect each other negatively or positively.

I worked on:

  • animations for player characters
  • animations for all monsters
  • rigs for monsters
  • 2D in-game assets (plants, tiles, seed icons)
  • oil monster model and textures

As a team I helped with concept art, character design, and game/level design.

I worked closely with the programmers to adapt certain assets to the way they would program objects in the scene, sometimes testing different methods as we were all trying out new things in Unity.

Character Designs

Reference sheets I made for our 3D modeller.

Another teammate and I had brainstormed lots of designs to try and land on something everyone in the team liked. I wanted to make sure the characters still made sense in the world and context we had created. I tried to aim for more fantastical and nature spirit looks (as in the game humans are pretty much gone), while stricking a balance with the more human looking designs that the other half of team envisionned. In the end the Earth character ended up with many elements from my concept art, and the Celestial character had a mix of design elements from both my teammate and I. Below are the designs I came up with, alongside the final ones.
